Hello Shipmate: I am a SUB-IDC who retired in December 2003. Although I have been successful in landing a good job in the civilian sector, I have tried on dozens of occasions to land a career at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia. This is where I began my Naval career, and I wish to end my final career stretch as a civilian at this facility. With the Navy investing over $200,000.00 in training us, why do they not reinvest by offering us career opportunities/placement once retired? Would appreciate a response. Thank you and keep up the good work by serving the medical community and your service to our country.
Very respectfully,
Steven E. Johnson

Hey Larry and thanks for your
Hey Larry and thanks for your post. After I retired in 2003 and received employment right away in the private sector. I immediately went into emergency management and planning for all-hazards disasters, i.e., bioterrorism, CBRNE, floods, tornados, etc., therefore I am not concerned for myself at this time. It is for those like yourself. It makes absolutely NO SENSE for the military to not re-invest our skills for their use. We were assigned a reviewing physician in the Navy, why can they not do the same as a retiree. They can put us to work right away. It would take a load off the physicians, P.As, NPs, Nurses, etc., especially in military sickcall, environmental health, preventive medicine, rad health, and so! Again, NO SENSE! I would not think it would be a liability issue if they would use us to evaluate military only and since we are not licensed, they would not have to worry about licensure, etc. I was hoping that Master Chief would check with command authorities and get back with me/us as to the root of the problem. It is simply a waste of talent/skills. Take care. - Steve
WHY DON'T THEY NEED US
I too had a problem getting employment following 30 years USN. Over 200 resumes sent, 00 returns. Then the number 50 pops up and now your too OLD to hire. Perhaps affirmative action was the reason for NOT getting that civilian job at Portsmouth or anywhere in the US government. After a few months going from one part time job to another, I finally got a call from Military Sealift with a job offer as an MSO. Needless to say, I'm still with MSC. You might try contacting MSC to see if there are any openings as an MSO (Medical Services Officer).
WHY DON'T THEY NEED US
Mr. Johnson,
I appreciate your past service to the U.S. I wish I had a good answer for you as to why you are not getting a job at Portsmouth. You would think that with all your medical training and experience that the Government would jump at the chance to continue to use your skills and knowledge of the Military Medical System. I wish I had a good answer for you.
