Greetings all. Quick question for you Touro guys out there. I just completed my B.S.H.S and was wondering what type of job I could get with it or what type of job you got with it? Thanks.
Adrian
Dunk,
Whats up man. I relieved you at 1MAW. You were legendary with the HM's there. I am working with Rob Forrester now. I am suspicious of the touro degree, seems too easy.
Hello Fellow IDC's
My Bachelors from GW is a BSHS and I'm currently atteding Cappella Univ for my Masters in Health Care Admin. I've been working as a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator for the last five years. I retired in 98 and completed my degree in 2000. Took a while to find this sector but it is and continues to be exceptionally rewarding. Most salaries nationwide start in the mid 50's to 60's. With just a few years experience, and depending on facility bed size, mid 70's to 80's. It's just like being on board ship in so many ways. Patient care, OSHA, Records, Pest Control, Water Sanitation and lots of plain ole leadership. I would encourage you to contact your state Health Care Association and or the Department of Health & Human Svcs. for more info or email me at idcnha [at] yahoo [dot] com. Sincerely, Jeffrey K. Schmidt, USN (Retired).
Hello Shipmates! I am a retired HM1(SS), NEC 8402/9502. I received my BSHS from Touro just prior to retirement in December 2003. I also had to make the transition from living in Japan for seven years and trying to land a job back at home. Tough as hell! At the time of retirement I was making about $35k per year. Saved a lot of money living overseas. Much needed upon return to the U.S. I had/have a love for law enforcement so I landed a job at Maryview Medical Center in Portsmouth, VA. I was the Manager of the hospital's security staff. My working title was Safety & Security Manager. This means you are the Security Manager, Safety Officer, and Emergency Preparedness Coordinator. With this comes training and certification as a HazMat Awareness & Operations Level Instructor and National Incident Management Systems/Incident Command Systems (NIMS/ICS) instructor. Training is offered for free by the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM). I also completed dozens of free courses offered on the FEMA.gov website under training/independent study. I left Maryview after two years due to accepting the same position with Sentara earning twice the salary, roughly 56k per year. I continued receiving all the free training on my own. I am now employed as the Norfolk Health District's Bio-Terrorism Emergency Planning Manager under the Virginia Department of Health. Great position! Skillsets include: chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, explosives (CBRNE), working with all health care staff and agencies, leadership, management, teaching, auditing, inspecting, triage, mass casualty management, decontamination, OSHA, ANSI, NFPA regulations, writing and reviewing policies and procedures, Joint Commission accreditation, and much more. I work closely with city emergency and regional planning managers, law and fire enforcement agencies, the CDC, etc., etc. Our diploma from BSHS from Touro is almost useless EXCEPT having earned the diploma. This shows agencies that you are capable of understanding higher learning modalities and capabilities. There is a huge need for disaster preparedness staff, security, law enforcement, and so on. The positions I've had since retiring have been extremely busy, tiring, and overwhelming at times. They are high stress positions because you are always in the forefront of everything. Salary is about 65-70k per year in this area. I will be 50 years old in a couple of months and I would like to land a position that is not sooooo busy but pays about the same. I could go on and on with this but it is time for bed. If you wish to contact me I can be reached at steve [dot] johnson [at] vdh [dot] virginia [dot] gov or sjohnson09 [at] charter [dot] net. Work cell is 757-435-2437. Hope this helps a little. Take care and many blessings! - Steve Johnson
Ladd,
Hey Hey. I was wondering where you ended up. Call me sometimes so we can catch up. My number is (805) 216-3400. My email is mlm0267 [at] yahoo [dot] com. I retired a few months ago and just got hired managing a clinic in California. The CEO is very interested in hiring more IDC's because of our clinical and administrative background. I got my BSHS earlier this year also.
Anyway please contact me so we can catch up.
Melissa

HM1 FERRIE,
Did you get a reply on your question for what kind of jobs are available with the BSHS from Touro? I have 183 days left in the Navy and am looking into this also.
Let me know if you come up with anything.
Thanks,

I have a degree from Southern Illinois University, took me 12 years to get it. I am about to retire in three mos and have had several job offers teaching at community colleges and also working with several health care agencies. Furthermore, that degree got me into PA school and I am in the second year of a Masters program. I will graduate May 2010, 6 mos after I retire. If you have any questions, rpcurl35 [at] yahoo [dot] com. I rarley go the Navy clinic as I am gearing up for retirement so shoot me an e-mail there.
