... and in combination with SFIDC 8 and SFIDC 10, "WE" won the Naval Activities Portsmouth / NNSY Flag Football Championship. I still have the football which all of you signed and presented to me.

here are some more class 9 memories. myself and someone else (Soto) drew the Mondakian Warlord on the back wall. We also put up the MK II Deep Anal Diving Suit in response to all the brownnosing.

Someone chased our instructor training instructor out of the room in tears.

One of our classmates was discharged for Polygamy. But his second wife Janni was worth it.

I spent more time in madelines than I did in class or studying.
My room mate John ??? was boarded out for cracking up over a girl in Texas. I reall felt bad about that but man he was so far gone.

I am sure I will think of more.

Greetings Fellow members of COMNAV11thFLT, and Plank Owners of Outland Naval Station.

Gee..where can I begin.

Made fatal career mistake of going to Nimitz. Everything I was taught in school, especially from Mr Mondak...was not allowed here. The IDC I relieved played politics, he was so incompetent he cost a 19 y/o sailor a nut. (Seriously! Kid came in c/o testicular pain. I saw him, and asked which one...he said tersely "I've got one." Luckily we had some sharp junior HMs- one pulled me aside and said Jimmy saw him back when they went on their WestPac.

Seems the lad came in with epididymitis...Jimmy told him to "stroke off", never looked...(he treated every sailor who came in the Medical like they were scamming, faking, trying to get out of work.) And when the kid came back 4-5 hours later in exquisite pain...it was a testicular torsion...and he had to have cold steel and sun shine. And our GMO was one of the MOs in the OR.

So, when I referred this kid to the MO, he told me I needed to do him. I flat out refused. "No sir, you saw him last. I refuse as it is beyond me."
Well...beginning of the end there.

Needless to say, what began as excellent evals suddenly went downhill when the new SMO came on board. Now, for those who know me, I'm ex-USAF, ex-Army, and basically know nothing about the Navy and it's stupid and arcane idiotic mentality... When ever someone came in, I treated that person ([i:ff89a11212]white hat or khaki[/i:ff89a11212]) the same...and I got in hot water all the time for seeing white hats before khaki.

So, when we got a new CO on the ship (some jerk named Alfred Harms-and I could care less if anyone reads this...) gave me the distinct impression people would start to die onboard. The ship always won the Safety award...but never a Battle "E". When Harms took command, we lost 1 Marine (suicide), 1 sailor (mishap during maintenance in dry-dock of cat arrestor system), and 1 civilian shipyard worker. No safety award..but a Battle "E". And my evals suddenly were placed in the hands of the "Director of Admin" and I was declared "in need of additional training". It gets even worse!

You know how "they" tell you you need a Warfare Qual to even get considered for promotion? I was working on both the SW & AW, and had CPOs & SCPOs from the appropriate depts, who gave me the books, and because I was always their for their folks...regardless if it was Sick Call hours or not, they would get me qual'd. Until the Medical SCPO decided "You can't even do your job right...what makes you think I'm authorizing you to do those?" And he ordered me to hand over the books.
(I learned he had been a Sub IDC...but had his Dolfins yanked for being drunk on duty. As he would never make HMCM, he felt it was his duty to kill other careers. IE: Our new Bio Med Tech -now a Reservist in St, Louis and a CPO- found that the previous BMT gun-decked all maint records for basically every thing in Medical. Our LifePack was rigged to show charging...but it had no batteries in side. Battle latnerns were rigged the same way. The only thing that saved Jay was he got TB & had to leave the ship.)

And right before the ship was to go on a 2 week cruise, I was called in, and given about 4 hours to pack my stuff...and was send to TPU. And, right before I was given permission to leave the ship...I got my papers at 1730. The ship left port the next morning at 0500.

I was "officially" sent to NAVHOSP BREMERTON for "Clinical Reinforcement"...but the CO & SMO told BUPERS the exact opposite- that I was Incompetent. Problem was- I was asigned to the Puget Sound Shipyard Branch Clinic, where I worked doing Occ Healeth & Ind. Hygiene Physical exams, sick call, ER duty, etc. And was the Training PO.
Until I got orders to NAVMARCORESCEN St. Louis. That's when the Branch Clinic CO, and Head of IDCs at NAVHOSP found out what had happened. Regardless of what they said, and the proof of capabilities and competence...I was emasculated by HARMS & PUCKETT.

(BTW- Peg Sheehy came to Bremerton, she had re-married, made CPO, and was to work at the SUBASE BANGOR Clinic.)

I got a 6 week short-notice PCS to St. Louis. It worked out well- I was sick and tired of the garbage on shipboard medicine and the hypocrisy.
I served at the Naval & Marine Corps Reserve Center in St. Louis from 1996 to 2002, when I retired. Seems EFMP is meaningless, my career was already dead- no chance for advancement, my knees were shot, had to have bilat retina surgery (? cause), and my wife's parents moved in with us. And in 2003, right after I satrted working for the American Red Cross, my mom was committed with Alzheimer's & Psychotic Dementia.

Pam: Holding up well. Her mom just died before Thanksgiving, from Plasma Cell Leukemia. Her dad is handling it fairly well...
Keara: (Daughter) Now 13, being a butt. However. she's keeping her grades up.
Me: ARC Blood Services works me on weird hours, but pay is good.
I needed a hobby, so I have acquired a 1953 Humber Pig MkII "Squirt".
This vehice (1 of 1700) was built as a 1 ton truck in '53, turned into an armoured personnel carrier by GKN-Sankey & Royal Ord, Factory-Leeds for the Brit Army, and it served in Germany from '54 to '69. Then it went into storage.

In 1969, "The Troubles" were starting in Northern Ireland, and Pigs were shown to be effective in urban settings. So this Pig was returned to service, and was 1 of 460 that was up-armoured (from 10,000 lbs to 14,000 lbs) to the Mk2 level. Then it was also 1 of 36 Mk2 Pigs to be fitted with the "Squirt" Anti-Riot Chemical Discharger, and with a 4-barrel 37mm launcher (yep- I have this as well... ) it was used for Riot Control duty- serving in the 6 counties from 1972 until the early 90s.
It came here about 2000, I bought it on eBay 5/2005.

[b:ff89a11212]HEY- MR MONDAK! I'VE FINALLY GOT MY ROLLS-ROYCE!
(Actually...the Pig as a 4.5 litre RR B-60 series 6-cyl engine)[/color:ff89a11212][/b:ff89a11212]

Refresh my memory since I have been out for 10 years now. What is EFMP.

EFMP is Exceptional Family Member Program.

Navy members with family members/dependents requiring special medical or educational needs must enroll. Depending on Category. Information can be found at https://efm.persnet.navy.mil/efm/

I remembered while I was out driving around this morning, but still nice to get an answer.

Chad,
Good to hear from you. I have some info on some of our classmates but not too current. I just left Mayport after 6 years and now back in San Diego on the BOXER.

I ran into Ed at the IDC conference in 2004 I believe and he was working at Camp Canaveral I think. I am pretty sure it was NASA related.

Last I heard from Bake was around 98 and he was still in Gulfpport.

Campanelli came to Mayport on the Obannon and ran into a lot of trouble. Ended up In Kansas was the story I heard.

Mike Greene and I have crossed paths a few times. He was in Norfolk last I heard, back on a small boy. Still the same but doing really well.

Sparks I thought was retiring when he left Greece. Threw some e-mails back and forth with him while I was cruising the med in 02.

Hope to hear from my former classmates and I wish you all the best. My wife and I split after my first tour (Anchorage LSD-36) as an IDC. Go figure. But I have moved on and remarried and have a few more tours under my belt.

Steve Richardson

Gerard White, dropped from class for medical, is now a LT, NC and was at NH Jax when I left. So was Fergi.

Steve

I have been in touch with Ed Soto, he is in North Carolina but he and his wife own property in FL. He was ready to retire.

Great to hear!! Congrats Shomo!!

Do any of you have photographs of your class? I'd appreciate any you might have. I donated many of the class photos that I had to NSHS Portsmouth for a display that apparently never happened. Last time I was there for Ricky Rogers' retirement, no one could account for any AHCS / SFIDC photos.

If anybody has scanned class pictures, we can create a Photo Album for them and post on here as well. I can assist with scanning if needed.

Hello all,

I see where a number of you have logged in and I feel bad that I have not done so before now.

After leaving the fine halls of NSHS Portsmouth I headed to my first ship, "The Great White Ghost of the Arabian Coast" and was the lone IDC on the USS LaSalle. During my tour on LaSalle I took over from an HM8424 and custody of a broken ship to the point where I had to casrep the ship's medical department as I only had about 5% supplies on board, a broken main sterilizer, all the portable sterilizers were filled with sand, the X-Ray machine could not direct a ray of x-ray in a proper direction and my doctor was not going to arrive for several months... Thus started my career as an IDC. Even with all the bad stuff my Medical crew turned out to be a great group and the Navy actually allowed me to pin on an anchor. After 5 years on the LaSalle (which changed ports to Gaeta, IT) I left for my first true shore duty back to NMCP where I was placed in Patient Administration as LCPO to that very large and active Department. During my time at NMCP I was sent to the USS Estocin where I had 4 months to make her deployable. Completing that tour I was close to 20 Years and wanted to retire... Well the Navy had other ideas and denied my request and sent me back to sea on the USS Carr After 3 years I retired at sea in route to Toulon France.

Since retirement I became a contractor to CACI working on the SAMS project specifically SAMS 9.0 on the TMIP project. I really enjoyed working at SPAWAR but my wonderlust took me to find a new job and my present job in Falls Church, Virginia. I am working for General Dynamics as a Functional Analyst for the Theater Functional Management Office.

Anyway, I hope that the rest of Class 09 is doing well and I hope that someday we will see each other again.

It is really great to hear of those that went on and received a commission.

Take Care
Mike Shuck

Theater Functional Management?

What the heck is that? If you wanted to show movies all day, you could have become an IDC Instructor...

Hey, it is great to hear that another Portsmouth grad did the job the way it was supposed to be done. You have also shown that there is a functional life for IDCs who have learned to "Improvise, Adapt and Overcome"

Good on, ya![/color:d2f8126e49][/size:d2f8126e49]

Hey Steve,,

This Ed Soto, yes the rock of class SFIDC9. Im presently station in Camp Lejeune with 2D MLG. Working in the Group Surgeon Office, finally home. In the last 3 yrs I been on a MEU, Deployed to Hiati and Fallujah Iraq.

I just spoke with Dave Norris (BubbleHead) he is still in King Bay, Ga. He should be retiring sometime early next year. Mike Greene in Texas and can wait to retire. Trantam just retired and is living here in NC somewhere. John Correa is a Lt (PA) now with (DIVGRP). He is back doing what he loves to do Special Operations. He did my Medical Readiness Inspection when I was at NAVSICATTS, Stennis Space Center, Ms (Special Boat Team). I haven't heard from anyone else.

It good to hear that some of us are still out. I'm still married (hard to believe) and have to kids in College.
Hope to hear from any of the other former classmates. Take care.

Edwin Soto
HMCS(FMF/SCW) IDC

I saw this site and "thread" when I "Googled" my own name.

I hope you found many of our classmates. I went back to Portsmouth as an instructor (1/1997) and retired in March 1999. I completed my master's in education at Old Dominion University -- began a really challenging teaching career.

it's all been good -- really good!

Hello all,

Time flies when you are having fun. This is Mike Shuck.

First of all it was really nice to read all the notes and I feel bad that I have not chimed in before now.

As you all may or may not remember I left school and headed to the USS LaSalle where I made the Great White Ghost gray and put on Chief and moved with the ship to Gaeta Italy. Being on the Six Fleet Flagship was a great tour. My total tour on LaSalle was 5 years.

After leaving LaSalle I headed for Naval Hospital Portsmouth for my first true shore duty in my Naval career but that did not last long as I sent to fix the USS Estocin followed by my final duty station USS Carr. I retired from the Navy in 2001 and landed in a position working on the SAMS project team at SPAWAR Norfolk.

Working as a Functional Analyst on the SAMS 9.0 project, one of my co-workers was Randy Beard. During my time with SAMS I found that I wanted to diverisfy so I packed up my household goods and moved from the Tidewater area up to DC where I became an analyst on the Theater Functional Management Office team. This job is quite rewarding in that I am responsible for establishing theater functional requirements for Medical Health Systems and I directly support the deputy assistant secretary of defense. Needles to say, my Navy IDC expierence has been a valued asset in this position.

Anyway, I hope that all is well with the rest of you all.

Take Care
Mike

Ex-Legalman ; )

Buddy of mine tipped me off to an old thread, said some folks looking for an old classmate -- well I doubt it's me -- I'm just a paper pushing APG reserve LN about a month away from my EOS.

anyway guys, I took the HM reserve correspondence course and really enjoyed it -- if I had to do it all over again I'd have come into the USNR as an HN or HA -- well, water under the bridge and I gotta roll on -- odd to see another guy with my name though -- not too many of us "Campanelli" out there!!

V/R,
